Vapor/Blood
I’m excited that Vapor/Blood, a dance, music, and theater piece by Tiffany Mills Company and Ensemble Ipse is premiering in a little less than two weeks. I have been working with Tiffany, Max Duykers (composer) and the dancers for the last 8 months or so as dramaturge. It’s been a nice return to working on the stage after a ten-year hiatus. I’ve known them both for a long time.
Max was the first person I worked with when I was starting Proto-type back in 1998/99. We collaborated on a piece we were called Eschaton 2000. It never saw the light of day, but Max wrote some great music for it and we learned how to work together (mostly remotely). Max went on to be a big part of Proto-type in its early years - even playing live every night when we did Bunny’s Last Night in Limbo.
Max and I met Tiffany in around 2002/2003 at HERE Arts Center, where we were all in residence as part of HARP. Tiffany and I collaborated on two shows: Berries and Bulls and Tomorrow’s Legs between 2008-2013. I love her choreographic perspective, which weaves narrative elements into the way she works with the dancer’s bodies. It’s always a delight being able to spend time with her and her creative mind.
Here are details about the show:

"The evening's showcase and entanglement of both the acoustic and electronic, of movement and theater, compositional and technical experimentation and storytelling forms, parallels National Sawdust's own commitment to the power of interdisciplinarity." —Broadway World
Celebrate the holiday season with us! National Sawdust presents a trilogy of collaborative live music and dance-theater pieces from Tiffany Mills Company and Ensemble Ipse. These three works feature the rare instrumentation of seven violas, paired with seven dancers.
Enjoy the World Premiere of "Vapor/Blood," a dance/theater work that investigates the power of sight in its many literal and metaphorical manifestations. It brings questions surrounding visibility and invisibility into vivid sonic and choreographic explorations, building a rich landscape of bodies, text, and sound.
Accompanying "Vapor/Blood," are two music/dance works first mounted in 2022: "Poem from Exile" and "Doa Persembunyian - A Prayer for Refuge."
